Program Note:
Fantasia for two saxophones and piano is a 6-minute piece inspired by my honeymoon trip to Japan in January 2024. Whilst exploring Japan, I was especially engrossed by the distinctive, esoteric quality found in Japanese koto music, and wanted to experiment with the four scales used in Japanese traditional music: the Hirajōshi, In, Insen, and Iwato scales, using a western instrumentation. Scored for soprano and baritone saxophones and piano, this piece is a portrayal of a conversation I was having with my husband. Rather than guiding the listener with a detailed program note, I want to give space for the listener to imagine what sort of ‘conversation’ the two saxophonists are having as they navigate through the different episodes in the piece.
